Environmental Justice in Space Workshop
Hosted by the Just Space Alliance
Panel: Rights of Nature - 7:30 PM – 8:30 PM Eastern, Thursday, June 20
Join us for the Environmental Justice in Space Workshop, where Mari Margil of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights, will join Dr. Alice Gorman; Dr. Michelle Maloney; and Dr. Huhana Smith, for a panel on applying the rights of nature in space.
As human activity in space increases, the Environmental Justice in Space Workshop will consider how to prevent the risk of damaging the space environment as we've damaged our environment here on Earth. And further, will consider what we can learn from environmental justice movements here on Earth about creating a sustainable and just relationship with the natural environment beyond our atmosphere.
The Rights of Nature panel will focus on the rights of nature movement and its application in space. The movement has recognized legally enforceable rights of the natural world, including the most basic right of all, the right to exist. This is transforming how nature is treated here on Earth, from being considered as a resource that environmental laws regulate the use and exploitation of, to nature being recognized as a living entity with legal rights, the highest level of protection in written human law.
The rights of nature has first been recognized here on Earth, in the face of growing environmental crises. In recent years, panel members have increasingly turned their eyes to the skies and the application of the rights of nature off-Earth.
Several panel members were drafters of the Declaration of the Rights of the Moon, and have engaged in a new dialogue on recognizing rights of the Moon and other celestial bodies, to protect them from the environmental harm that space travel and human activity has already brought to the Earth's orbit and the Moon.
