The Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights is working to combat the drastic effects of global warming in the Himalayas.

Climate change and global warming are impacting people, species, and ecosystems in the Himalayas and throughout Nepal.

Nepal's contribution to greenhouse gas emissions are .09 percent of global emissions, but the impact of global warming is tremendous, causing rapid melting of Himalayan glaciers, ice, and snow. The Himalayas, often described as the planet’s third pole, is the fasting warming mountain range on Earth.

CDER is working to advance the rights of nature – and a proposal to recognize rights of the Himalayas – to protect the mountains and Nepal. We are engaging with Members of Parliament and local, montaineers, trekkers, and other key stakeholders.

CDER Associate Shrawan Sharma, long-time director of our partner organization, the Kathmandu-based Center for Economic and Social Development. He is leading our work in Nepal. This includes developing legislation to recognize the right of the Himalayan mountain range to a healthy climate free from human-caused global warming pollution.

In the first quarter of 2021, Shrawan wrote an article in Online Khabar on Nepal and the rights of nature in Nepalese and can be found here.
