A Message of Solidarity with PMPI

Today, the Philippines is a leader in the growing movement for the Rights of Nature because of the work of Philippine-Misereor Partnership.

In the face of growing environmental crisis around the world, PMPI is demonstrating the importance of advancing the Rights of Nature to make the significant changes that are needed in how humankind governs itself toward the natural world.

The Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights is very proud to be assisting and partnering with PMPI in its campaign for the Rights of Nature, including developing legislation to secure the Rights of Nature in the national laws of the Philippines.

The Rights of Nature involves securing legal rights of the natural world in order to protect even the most basic right of nature to exist and thrive. This represents a fundamental shift in humankind’s relationship with nature, moving from one of use and exploitation, to a relationship based on protection and harmony.

As the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines wrote in 2019, in its An Urgent Call for Ecological Conversion, Hope in the Face of Climate Emergency:

The recognition of the Rights of Nature is at the core of the call for ecological conversion…The prevalent anthropocentric and utilitarian perspectives tend to negate our traditional role of responsible stewardship and deny the reality that humans are part of nature.

Today, PMPI is doing the important work of bringing faith, civil society, and others together into a unified network, to advance the changes that are essential to protecting people, communities, and nature. The Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights is very proud to assist and partner with PMPI in this work, and stand in solidarity with you.
