The April 8th Rights of Nature webinar focused on the first Rights of Nature law passed in Canada, to protect the MagPie/Meteshekau Shipu River. A recording along with additional information can be found in our Video section. We had two special guest speakers for this event:

  • Yenny Vega Cardenas, a Canadian lawyer who helped to draft local laws recognizing rights for the MagPie/Muteshekau Shipu River in Quebec in collaboration with the Innus Council of Ekuanitshit and the Minganie Regional County Municipality and

  • Pier-Olivier Boudreault is a professional biologist, working as the director of conservation for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Quebec section.

The April 27th webinar delved into the rights of nature in tribal law and governance. Frank Bibeau, Attorney for the White Earth Band of Ojibwe and with Honor the Earth, and Guy Reiter, Executive Director of Menikanaehkem, joined us as guest speakers to discuss the journey of tribal nations to protect the rights of nature, as well as the direction within the tribal communities to protect Earth as a sovereign being.

Frank and Guy are advancing the rights of nature in tribal law and governance – including Frank’s work with the White Earth Band’s “Rights of Manoomin” law, and Guy with the “Rights of the Menominee River” resolution. An on-demand version of this webinar recording is also available on YouTube.
