June 21, 2022

The Future of Manoomin

Thomas Linzey, Senior Legal Counsel for CDER and Frank Bibeau, White Earth Tribal Attorney recently spoke on the 99% Invisible Podcast.

They discussed the ongoing case of Manoomin v Minnesota Department of Natural Resources - the first rights of nature enforcement case to be brought in a tribal court - seeking to enforce the rights of manoomin, or wild rice, to exist and thrive. Manoomin is a core facet of Ojibwe culture and this case serves as an important part of protecting indigenous rights.

Thomas and Frank explore the history of the rights of nature laws on the books, and the hopeful outcome at the end of this journey.
