On March 18th, 2021, ABC News (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) published an article on the Declaration of the Rights of the Moon. Jackie Dent for Late Night Live focused on the work of Mari Margil and Dr. Michelle Maloney of the Center for Democratic and Environmental Rights, Dr. Alice Gorman, Thomas Gooch, and Ceridwen Dovey. This declaration is an important first step in creating a space for discussing how to best protect the moon, and hopefully, other space entities.

Many countries, corporations, and public figures have discussed relocating to the Moon or even mining it. The idea is that it is a resource to be used in much of the same humans have done to the Earth. However, the Declaration of the Rights of the Moon argues that “the Moon has a meaningful existence of its own, independent of humans” and "isn't just a resource for us to use" (ABC News, 2021). This declaration is an important step in securing the rights of nature. Celestial nature and environments are natural beings nonetheless, and deserving of the right to exist and flourish.
