Enbridge began running full force on October 1st, 2021. This is after construction was completed on the upgrade of its Line 3 crude oil pipeline across Minnesota. This is after consistent and strong opposition from environmentalists and indigenous rights advocates. Winona LaDuke, of Honor the Earth, is the most prominent voice in this fight. She states:

“brave efforts about Enbridge’s Line 3 have reshaped the world’s views on the climate crisis we are in, the Treaty Rights of the Anishinaabe, and the escalating divestment in fossil fuels around the world and here at home”.

The White Earth Tribal Band (that LaDuke is a part of) has pushed a “rights of nature” lawsuit within the tribal courts, which is on its way to the federal court system. Manoomin, or wild rice, is serving as the plaintiff against the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources. The outcome hoped for is that the rights of natural beings to exist, and the cultural identity of the Ojibwe to be protected, will be enforced over the rights of corporations.
