Rights of Nature 101: April 8th, 2021

The April 8th Rights of Nature webinar focuses on the first Rights of Nature law passed in Canada, to protect the MagPie/Meteshekau Shipu River. We have two special guest speakers for this event:

  • Yenny Vega Cardenas, a Canadian lawyer who helped to draft local laws recognizing rights for the MagPie/Muteshekau Shipu River in Quebec in collaboration with the Innus Council of Ekuanitshit and the Minganie Regional County Municipality and

  • Pier-Olivier Boudreault is a professional biologist, working as the director of conservation for the Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society – Quebec section.

This training is intended for communities and groups in the U.S. interested in learning about the Rights of Nature movement, and how to implement it in their own town or city. It focuses on the concept of legally enforceable Rights of Nature, and will trace the development of Rights of Nature laws and court decisions around the world. This includes efforts currently underway across the United States and around the globe to enact and enforce local and national laws recognizing the rights of ecosystems and nature.
